OPINION:
James Golden’s recent op-ed, “Why aren’t there more Black conservatives?” (Web, Dec. 8) focuses on increasing the number of Black conservatives. It would help if Mr. Golden offered solutions to the present conditions of violence and poverty affecting too many Black Americans.
Here are some suggestions. First, recognize that cannabis use is endemic among violent offenders. Push for all arrestees to be tested for its use so we can develop statistics showing it to be nearly universal among this population. Cannabis use may lead to disturbed thinking and psychosis. Second, support monthly stipends to the homeless for one year with mandates for drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Third, develop a communication network with pastors Sharpton and Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and other Black leaders to urge them to speak out against the elements hindering our progress (drugs, easy bail, etc.) Fourth, recognize that incarceration is a first step to rehabilitation. Finally, communities must develop resources to offer children training in music, tennis, golf and other sports so that their adult lives may be enriched.
No doubt there are additional ideas, but these can be a start.
