In the midst of the Civil War, President Lincoln told Congress: “The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.” Lincoln’s trial lit him down in high honor. Not so with President Biden’s trial.

Biden’s was not a fiery trial, for he slipped the American troops out of Afghanistan without a fired shot. It was, however, a defining trial, one that left chaos in its wake, military hardware in unfriendly hands and untold numbers of American citizens and supporters at the tender mercy of the Taliban. It has been a trial that should light him down in dishonor to the last generation.
