Regardless of how you felt about the war in Vietnam or how you feel about the war in Afghanistan, one thing is certain: When we leave Afghanistan — just as when we left Vietnam — thousands upon thousands who supported us will be killed, or worse. Those who worked with our troops in both conflicts will pay or have paid dearly for helping us.

In Afghanistan, can we leave behind those who have been strong supporters of freedom and now want to come with us (and bring their families)?  Well, we will — and they will be on their own against the Taliban.

Those left behind in Vietnam died or suffered because they had nowhere to go to escape the Vietcong. Now, again, in the months to come will we remember those who stood with us in Afghanistan and were abandoned to deal with a vicious enemy?
