LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Louisiana’s Giant Omelette Celebration is returning this fall after taking a year off because of the coronavirus pandemic.
KATC-TV reports that the event, which features a giant omelette cooked by multiple chefs in front of crowds in Abbeville, will be held Nov. 6 and 7. Organizers announced the festival’s return by saying: “We are soooo Egggcited!!”
The Vermilion Parish festival - which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2019, the last time it was held - draws people from around the country.
Organizers say the tradition traces back to the 19th century in the small town of Bessières in southern France.
The Abbeville recipe started years ago with 5,000 eggs - with one more egg added each year. Also used in the dish are 50 pounds of onions, 75 bell peppers, gallons of onion tops and parsley, gallons of cooking oil and milk, 52 pounds of butter and boxes of pepper and salt.
The omelette is served free to all who gather to watch with a side of French Bread.
In addition to the cooking of the omelette, the festival includes music, contests, a charity walk and an arts and crafts show.
