JOANNA, S.C. (AP) - Two 14-year-old girls who a coroner described as best friends died Thursday when their all-terrain vehicle struck a tractor-trailer in a small South Carolina town.

The girls were tying to cross state Highway 56 in Joanna around 4:30 p.m. when the wreck happened, state troopers said,

Jasmine Peake, 14, of Joanna, and Madison Simmons, 14, of Gray Court, were not wearing helmets and died at the scene, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office told news outlets.



The statement from the coroner’s office said the girls were best friends and called it a sad day for their families and all the agencies investigating the wreck.

The state Highway Patrol said a special team of troopers is investigating the crash.
