JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A man who authorities said was armed with a loaded handgun was shot and wounded by police after he allegedly ran away from officers.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. Tuesday in Jersey City, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
City police were conducting an investigation when they spotted Korron Benthall, 21, of Jersey City, with what appeared to be a handgun. When they approached him and identified themselves as officers, Benthall fled on foot across the parking lot of a nearby public housing complex, authorities said,
Benthall was soon spotted dropping a gun, which he then picked up and raised, authorities said. One officer then fired his weapon, and a shot hit Benthall in the wrist. He was taken to a hospital, and his wound was not considered life-threatening.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities did not identify the officer who fired the shot, but said a loaded gun was recovered at the scene.
Benthall faces two weapons charges. It wasn’t known Wednesday if he has retained an attorney.
The shooting is being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, which is standard procedure when an officer fires his weapon.
