ABILENE, Kan. (AP) - A 7-year-old Abilene girl died Wednesday when she was hit by a car as she was crossing a street to board a school bus, authorities said.
Dickinson County Sheriff Gareth Hoffman said the girl was hit just east of Abilene by a car driven by a 15-year-old Chapman High School student. The bus was stopped facing west with its flashing red lights on and the car was driving east, Hoffman said.
The girl died at an Abilene hospital.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was a first-grader at St. Andrew’s Catholic School.
The school said in a statement it had activated its team of counselors to provide support for students, staff and families.
The investigation is continuing, Hoffman said.
