BONNEAU, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina police chief was injured when a man knocked on his door, then stabbed the official in the face with a metal tool, according to authorities.

Forrest Bowman faces a charge of assaulting a police officer after he was accused of attacking Bonneau Police Chief Franco Fuda on Monday morning, Berkeley County sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said Bowman knocked on the door of Fuda’s home, then lunged at the chief with what was suspected to be a screwdriver or a tire repair tool. Fuda received treatment at a hospital Monday afternoon, the sheriff added.

State Law Enforcement Division agents tracked the man to a mobile home in the area, and Berkeley County deputies and a SWAT team deployed gas and took him into custody after negotiating with him for more than two hours, Chief Deputy Jeremy Baker said.

Investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the attack.

It was unclear whether Bowman had an attorney who could comment for him.

Bonneau is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Charleston.
