LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska health officials have confirmed the death of a western Nebraska man from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a disease carried by ticks.
The man died this year - the first death from the disease in five years, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said. Officials declined to name the man, citing privacy policy, but say he was in his 60s and lived in the West Central District Health Department, which includes Arthur, Hooker, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson and Thomas counties.
The department said it has seen an increase in reports of tick-borne disease this year.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a bacterial disease that is marked by fever, headache and a rash. It is treatable, but can be deadly if left untreated.
