KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas City man who was shot by a police officer over the weekend has been charged with sexually assaulting his girlfriend before the chase that led to his shooting, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office said.
Pierre Bey-Crawford, 32, was charged with rape or attempted rape, armed criminal action and other crimes, the prosecutor announced Sunday.
Charging documents indicate the girlfriend told police Bey-Crawford hit her, sexually assaulted strangled her before police arrived. Bey-Crawford was leaving the apartment when officers arrived and a pursuit began, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
After the vehicle crashed, Bey-Crawford fled on foot. At some point, he started digging around his waistband and did not comply when told to show his hand, patrol spokesman Sgt. Bill Lowe said.
Bey-Crawford was shot when he “directed a black object towards the officer,” Lowe said. Police said a handgun was found near where he was taken into custody.
Bey-Crawford was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available on Monday. Online court records do not name an attorney to speak for him.
