BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Montana authorities have not filed charges against a man involved in a fatal shooting in response to what police said was an ongoing assault of a woman.

The Yellowstone County coroner said 43-year-old Robert Aven Kolter of Roundup died of multiple gunshot wounds during the shooting in Billings Monday.

Kolter was shot while in the backyard of a home around 4:20 p.m., authorities said.

A 34-year-old Billings man who lived in the home shot Kolter, Billings Police Department Lt. Brandon Wooley said in a statement.

Kolter was in a relationship with a 33-year-old woman. He drove about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Roundup to the home and assaulted, choked and “pistol whipped” the woman while trying to force her to leave with him, police said.

Kolter placed a handgun against the woman’s head, at which point the other man shot Kolter multiple times, Wooley said.

The Billing’s police detectives division is investigating the shooting, Wooley said.
