BALTIMORE (AP) - Sixty four Maryland nursing homes have failed to take sufficient infection control measures to protect their residents from the coronavirus.
The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday that the number is based on state inspection records that the newspaper obtained.
Ten of the nursing homes have faced significant fines. The penalties range from $70,000 to $380,000. Forty-five facilities got smaller fines for failing to complete mandatory testing and for not reporting records to the state. Others were ordered to develop a plan to fix the problems.
The inspection records show the challenges of protecting a particularly vulnerable population. And observers say that more attention is needed.
Many seniors have underlying health conditions. And they make up a disproportionate share of deaths in Maryland from COVID-19.
Maryland health officials say all 226 of the state’s certified nursing homes have now been surveyed.
