PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police officers in Rhode Island shot a dog that later had to be euthanized because it would not stop attacking another dog and two people, including a 14-year-old girl, police said.
Two pit bulls attacked a husky mix in the yard of a Providence home on Wednesday morning, Cmdr. Thomas Verdi said.
When the husky’s owner, a 14-year-old girl, tried to intervene, the pit bulls turned on her, police said. The owner of the pit bulls, who lives in the same multifamily home, was also attacked when he stepped in, police said.
One officer tried using an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop the attacking dogs. One pit bull ran in the house before four officers opened fire on the second pit bull, injuring it.
It was taken to an animal hospital where it was euthanized, Verdi said. The girl and the pit bulls’ owner were checked out at the hospital.
The owner of the pit bulls faces a vicious dog hearing. Police did not release any names.
