WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) - A 10-year-old girl died and several other people including at least one other child were injured in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Westport, authorities said.
The crash occurred just after 2 a.m. on Route 6 near the Route 88 interchange, according to a statement from the Bristol district attorney’s office.
The Westport, Dartmouth and Fall River fire departments responded and transported seven patients to hospitals in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, police said.
The 10-year-old New Bedford girl and her 9-year-old sister were both taken to the hospital. The older girl was pronounced dead at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. The younger girl is in serious condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, according to the district attorney’s office.
According to the preliminary investigation, the sisters were apparently sitting in the rear of a car driven by a 29-year-old woman that made minor contact with a pickup truck, authorities said.
The vehicles stopped in the left travel lane to assess the damage. As both vehicles were about to continue driving, a Jeep SUV slammed into the rear of the car, pushing it into the pickup.
No names were released. The crash remains under investigation.
