A Wichita man who stabbed his roommate to death as police officers were leaving his home has been sentenced to life in prison.

Jason Leigh McCaleb, 45, stabbed 28-year-old Devin Andrea Cook up to 50 times on Nov. 23, 2019, moments after police had told him to evict her if she wouldn’t leave the home, according to court records.

The officers were walking away when they heard Cook screaming for help but they were not able to get back into the house. After officers said they were going to break down the door, McCaleb opened it.

He was covered in blood and officers found Cook suffering from multiple stab wounds. McCaleb told officers he didn’t open the door earlier because he didn’t want them to stop him from killing Cook, according to an affidavit.

Police initially went to McCaleb’s home after he reported that Cook refused to leave. Officers told McCaleb that Cook had established residency and they could not force her to leave, according to court documents.

McCaleb pleaded guilty on July 24 to first-degree premeditated murder. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.

Sedgwick County Judge Jeff Syrios imposed the sentence last week.
