ROSEDALE, Md. (AP) - Police in Maryland have shot a man who they say was acting erratically and had charged an officer.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the incident occurred Thursday afternoon in Rosedale in Baltimore County. Police said the man was alert and taken to a hospital.
Earlier that day, police said the man was dropped off at a hospital for a mental health evaluation. But he never went inside.
Police said the man was later seen chopping branches from trees and was throwing them into a street.
Sgt. Vickie Warehime, a Baltimore County Police spokeswoman, said the man stepped into the middle of a road and was waving “a long, silver chain.” She also said that a 911 call reported that the man had a knife or a blade.
Police said the man ignored commands from an officer and started running at the officer, who told the man to stop. Police said the officer stepped backward but the man continued, and the officer fired his gun.
Warehime declined to provide details regarding whether any de-escalation techniques were used.
Police said that several weapons were recovered at the scene. Police are also reviewing body camera footage.
The races of the officer and the man were not released.
