SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Several arrests have been made in the death of a young girl whose remains were found in a Delaware softball field a year ago, authorities said.
On Tuesday, Smyrna police said “persons of interest” outside the state were arrested, The Delaware News Journal reported.
Police spokesman Cpl. Brian Donner said detectives and the FBI are still executing search warrants and conducting interviews.
Donner said no additional information on the suspects or the case would be immediately released. He also said if the suspects were to be transferred to Smyrna police, the department would announce the “full details.”
Donner also wouldn’t say whether the girl has been identified. A person walking their dog discovered the remains in Little Lass Fields on Sept. 13, 2019. Little Lass is a softball park across the road from Smyrna Middle School.
Police said there was evidence of a fire at the scene.
Authorities believe the girl was either Caucasian or Hispanic with slightly wavy brown hair, between the ages of 2 and 5.
An exam of the remains suggested that the girl “suffered from chronic illness(es),” police said. Authorities believe the girl died several weeks before she was found.
