HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii reported 87 new confirmed cases and three deaths from the coronavirus.
The reports on Friday bring the total in the state since the start of the pandemic to 142 deaths and 12,601 confirmed cases.
The three deaths were a man who “was 80 or older” and two women in their 60s, the state Department of Health said.
Friday was the second day in a row that health officials reported three Oahu deaths from the coronavirus.
The state has not officially counted the more than dozen deaths at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, which has experienced a coronavirus outbreak. Hilo Medical Center had reported that 27 of the island’s 29 coronavirus deaths have been residents of the facility. The state’s official death toll includes only 15 Hawaii Island deaths as of Friday.
There are 2,070 infections in Hawaii that are considered active, with a total of 10,389 people now classified by state health officials as “released from isolation,” the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
Since the pandemic began, health officials said 880 people have required hospitalization, with 18 new hospitalizations reported on Friday. There have been 11,365 confirmed cases on Oahu, 752 in Hawaii County, 391 in Maui County and 59 in Kauai County.
The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some - especially older adults and people with existing health problems - it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
