PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Department of Health Services on Saturday reported 636 additional known COVID-19 cases and 12 more deaths.

The known case total increased to 220,399 and the death roll rose to 5,705 as COVID-19-related hospitalization metrics reported by the department as of Friday remained fairly level.

According to Johns Hopkins University data analyzed by The Associated Press, Arizona’s seven-day rolling averages of daily new cases and daily deaths dropped in the past two weeks.

The average of daily new cases went from 774 on Sept. 18 to 485 on Friday while the average of death deaths dropped from 23 to 15.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

In other developments:

- The Navajo Nation, which sprawls across Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, reported 17 new coronavirus cases and no new deaths Saturday. The total number of deaths related to the virus on the huge reservation remains at 558, and the total number of cases is now 10,421.
