DENVER (AP) - A small portion of the newest state park in Colorado is scheduled to open beginning this weekend.
Fishers Peak State Park is expected to open following a ribbon cutting Friday by Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, The Denver Post reports.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said they want the limited opening to give the public a sense of the hiking, hunting and wildlife opportunities the park will offer.
The new park eventually will encompass 30 square miles (78 square kilometers), but less than 1 square mile (2.6 square kilometers) will open this weekend.
Fishers Peak, which rises to 9,633 feet (2,936 meters), is located 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of the New Mexico border.
Hiking options will be limited this weekend to a “Sneak peek area” and visitors will have to wait for trails to the summit, Fishers Peak and Trinidad Lake Park Manager Crystal Dreiling wrote in a Colorado Parks & Wildlife online post.
Part of the area opening this weekend is called the Challenge Trail, a 1.5-mile (2.41-kilometer) hiking route.
“Most professionally-designed trails don’t exceed 8 to 10% grades. Our Challenge Trail will have you feeling the burn on stretches that exceed 30% grade,” Dreiling wrote.
