SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Weather officials in Utah have issued a warning to be aware of slick roads after Wasatch Front received snow for the first time this season over the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City warned people in a Twitter post on Sunday to be aware of ice and slippery surfaces under heavy patches of snow through Monday, the Deseret News reported. It also warned residents to secure outdoor equipment because of anticipated high winds.

The agency estimated that there would be periods of snow across the northern and central Wasatch Front, a metropolitan region in the north-central part of the state.

Most residents reported a dusting of snow, while some in Bountiful received up to 5 inches (12 centimeters).

After there was at least one fatal crash in Tooele, the Utah Department of Transportation cautioned drivers of wintry conditions including “patchy ice” and snow plows on the road.

Tooele Police Lt. Lonnie Collings said the roads were “very slushy” at the time of the crash.

Officials also said the weather brought a pandemic-caused delay into focus when the town ordered special stronger snow blades for its new snow plows a few months ago, but the order has yet to arrive.

Woodland Hills City Councilwoman Kari Malkovich, who also serves as the city’s spokeswoman, said the new blades are important, since the ones that come with the snow plows only last up to four hours.

“We need them to last the whole season, and that’s important for us,” Malkovich said, adding that the city does not know when the blades will arrive.

The Utah Weather Center said the snow is expected to taper off, but the state is in for “brutally cold conditions” Monday.
