A deputy recruit has been fired from the sheriff’s office in New Orleans and is facing criminal charges, the sheriff said Friday in a news release.

The statement said admitted to twice smuggling contraband into New Orleans’ jail. He was arrested Wednesday evening on charges including possession of marijuana, malfeasance in office and conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal institution.

Online court records show bond was set at $7,000 for 21-year-old Jeremiah Lewis, who hasd not yet entered a plea in the case Friday.
