WEST RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The cause of a fire in a West Rutland apartment building over the weekend is suspicious, authorities said.
Investigators were able to find the origin of the fire but not the cause, Vermont State Police said Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived shortly after midnight on Saturday they found heavy smoke and fire coming from first floor and started to extend into the second floor, officials said. Crews quickly started to suppress the fire and the building was saved, police said. All occupants and pets were able to escape the building without injury, police said.
The fire is considered to be suspicious at this time and remains under investigation, police said. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Vermont State Police Det. Sgt. James Wright at the Shaftsbury Barracks at 802-442-5421 or the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program hotline at 1-800-32-ARSON (1-800-322-7766). The program will pay up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
