Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden says there should be “zero discrimination” against children as young as 8 years old if he or she “decided I want to be transgender.”
The former vice president made the comment Thursday evening during ABC’s town-hall event when asked about LGBTQ rights for a woman’s transgender daughter.
“How will you as president reverse this dangerous and discriminatory agenda [under President Trump] and ensure that the lives and rights of LGBTQ people are protected under U.S. law?” Mieke Haeck asked.
Mr. Biden said he would eliminate executive orders signed by Mr. Trump and “just flat-out change the law” where necessary — a promise that hinges on action by the legislative branch.
“The idea that an 8-year-old child or a 10-year-old child decides you know, I decided I want to be transgender. That’s what I think I’d like to be. It’d make my life a lot easier. There should be zero discrimination,” Mr. Biden added.
He then used the moment to condemn violence against “transgender women of color.”
“They’re being murdered,” Mr. Biden said.
