NEW YORK (AP) - New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Sunday that her office is investigating the death of a 20-year-old woman who was struck by a police car rushing to a call in the Bronx.

James said her office’s Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit is looking into the crash that killed Sofia Gomez last week. Gomez died three days after a New York Police Department vehicle struck her Monday afternoon in an intersection near her home.

Police said the marked patrol car had its flashing lights and siren on as it responded to another officer’s call for backup at a traffic stop on the Throgs Neck Bridge.

The attorney general is authorized to investigate cases where a police officer causes the death of an unarmed civilian, and prosecute if warranted.
