PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix police sergeant shot and wounded a man wielding a wooden-handled pruning saw as he moved toward the officer, police said Thursday.
The wounds of the man shot Wednesday night were described by police as serious but not life-threatening.
According to a police statement, the incident began with a report of an armed man acting violently, assaulting other people and causing damage.
A police sergeant who responded saw the man was armed with an “edged weapon” and he ran off as the sergeant ordered him to stop and drop the weapon, police said.
The sergeant chased the man and found him in a drainage ditch and still armed with the weapon, police said.
He ignored commands to drop the weapon and stay where he was but instead got up and held the weapon while advancing toward the sergeant, who shot him, police said.
The sergeant wasn’t injured, police said.
No identities were released.
