NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A Newport woman has been sentenced to six months of home detention for running over a woman in a parking lot with her van last year.
Monica Donofrio, 32, ran over Emily West, 35, after West and another woman attempted to call the police on Donofrio about leaving her children alone in the vehicle, WCAX-TV reported. West had confronted Donofrio in a store about the children and then tried to stop her from driving away.
West was seriously injured.
On Wednesday, two mental health experts testified in court about Donofrio’s mental state. Both, including her personal psychologist, said she had a troubled past of abuse and trauma and felt threatened when West approached her, the news station reported.
In speaking directly to Donofrio, West testified that she wished things had happened differently while Donofrio apologized to West for her actions.
In addition to the home detention, Donofrio was sentenced to five years of probation for gross negligent operation with serious bodily injury resulting.
