TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man whose murder conviction was overturned by the state’s highest court has been shot and killed, prosecutors say.
Jean Carlos Lopez, 30, was found suffering from a gunshot wound outside his Taunton home at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the office of Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III. He was taken to Morton Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The district attorney’s office confirmed to the Taunton Daily Gazette that Lopez was the same man sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murder in connection with a 2010 homicide in the city.
Lopez was released from prison in March after the Supreme Judicial Court overturned his conviction, ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was at the 2010 murder scene.
The district attorney’s office said it is too soon to say whether Lopez’s killing is connected to the 2010 homicide.
The death remains under investigation by city police and the district attorney’s homicide unit and no arrests have been made.
