TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A total of 13 people have been charged in 12 separate cases in Florida for stealing more than $1 million in Social Security benefits.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tampa announced the charges Monday.

Federal officials said they’re aggressively targeting people who steal money that the Social Security Administration has inadvertently paid to deceased beneficiaries, usually family members of those charged. So far, 35 people have been charged as part of Operation Dead Ringer.

The latest 13 people to be charged with theft of government funds each face up to a decade in federal prison.
