CODY, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Department of Transportation will do all it can to keep winter roads clear in the face of budget cuts implemented earlier this year, an official said.

Transportation department spokesperson Cody Beers said the agency’s top priority will be to keep school bus routes open, The Cody Enterprise reports.

“We have a limited amount of funds and we’re going to try to keep under budget,” Beers said. “We’re going to try to do as much as we can and try to make it look the same as it has in the past.”

Budget cuts have not affected stores of sand and salt for roads, but drivers will need to increase their personal responsibility while traveling, Beers said.

“If it’s snowing and blowing in Wyoming, maybe it’s okay to get to your appointment another day,” Beers said. “Can you leave earlier in the day? Can you drive slower? It’s probably going to require a lot more care on drivers’ parts.”

A more temperate start to the winter has helped the department’s budget by saving funds necessary for overtime pay and equipment costs, Beers said.
