FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Supreme Court has issued new mandates to limit in-person proceedings and restrict access to judicial facilities as the coronavirus continues to spread in Kentucky.
Nearly all of Kentucky’s 120 counties are in the critical or red category, the highest level of average daily cases based on population.
Kentucky Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. said in an email to court personnel last week that court activities must be restricted now to protect the public and court staff.
“We have a responsibility to do all we can to keep people from being exposed to a potentially fatal virus,” Minton said.
The orders become effective on Nov. 30 and affect every county.
They adopt as mandates many recommendations announced last month and include limiting entrance to judicial facilities, requiring remote hearings in many proceedings, postponing jury trials until Feb. 1 and requiring grand juries to either be conducted remotely or suspended.
