BONNIEVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A man who shot and wounded a sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot Wednesday by a Kentucky State Police trooper when he exited a vehicle with a gun, authorities said.
The Breckinridge County Sheriff’s deputy was shot Tuesday night during a traffic stop, Kentucky State Police said in a statement. The suspect ran on foot, stole a pickup truck from the area and fled, police said. State troopers were called in to help search for him.
Troopers found the stolen vehicle early Wednesday in Grayson County and pursued it as the driver fired multiple gunshots, police said. The pursuit ended in Hart County when the pickup truck left the roadway. Police said James Horton, 42, exited the vehicle with a gun and a trooper fired at him. Horton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy was being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The races of Horton and the trooper who shot him were not immediately released.
An investigation is ongoing.
