A man accused of hitting a Zachary firefighter and volunteer reserve police officer with a U-Haul truck in 2018 is set to stand trial for manslaughter on May 3.

Firefighter Christopher Lawton and another officer were trying to arrest Albert Jermaine Franklin on a gun-related offense on March 12, 2018 in Baker, according to The Advocate. During the attempted arrest, Lawton was struck and killed by a truck that authorities say Franklin was driving.

Franklin was given the trial date Friday. He has pleaded not guilty. District Court Judge Tiffany Foxworth is overseeing the case.

Zachary is located approximately 15 miles north of Baton Rouge.
