ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) - The Maine Community Foundation is giving more than $100,000 in grants to organizations around the state that are supporting animal welfare during the coronavirus pandemic.

The foundation said the 16 grants are going to help animal shelters, humane societies and pet rescue and adoption services. The groups are dealing with increased need for pet food and supplies and an uptick in animals needing shelter, the foundation said.

Animal welfare groups in Maine are also coping with a growing number of people surrendering pets and increased need for financial help to meet medical needs, the foundation said.

The Maine Community Foundation is also currently taking applications from organizations that work on population control for cats and dogs. It’s taking applications until June 1.
