ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Firefighters in Virginia responding to a call found a person’s body inside an apartment, authorities said Friday.

First responders were dispatched at 2:15 a.m. to the 2300 block of Tuckawana Circle, Roanoke Fire-EMS said in a news release. The first responders found smoke coming from a second-floor apartment, and when they went inside, they found a person who was dead, according to the release.

The fire was already out when crews arrived and was contained to the single apartment, the release said.

The department said the fire resulted from cooking that was left unattended, and added that the medical examiner will investigate the cause of death. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
