HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - Police in New Hampshire are thanking a 3-year-old boy for noticing that the newspapers had piled up on his elderly neighbor’s porch, saving her from a dangerous situation: She was trapped in her basement.

Eyas Tran and his mother went for a walk in Hampton on Wednesday. He wanted to put the newspaper on his neighbor’s porch.

But when he got to the porch, he noticed something. “There was one, two, three newspapers,” Eyas said in an interview with WBZ-TV. He told his mother.

The neighbor, who lives alone, wasn’t answering her phone or the door. When police were able to gain entry, they found the woman, who was in the basement, trapped in a small corridor. She was in good spirits despite being trapped for over three days, they said. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police encouraged residents to check on the elderly and vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We truly thank this young boy for his actions in alerting his mother,” said Deputy Chief David Hobbs said. “We just want to say to everybody else, ‘Be more like Eyas. Check on your neighbors. Look after each other.’”
