SEATTLE (AP) - A woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after police said she hit a bicyclist with her car in Tacoma, Washington, authorities said.

Tacoma Police spokesperson Wendy Haddow said the department believes the woman, 47, was speeding when she swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting a car that stopped at a crosswalk in front of her, The Seattle Times reported.

The cyclist, 51, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Haddow said.

Police temporarily closed North Vassault Street between 36th and 37th streets to investigate the collision, she said.

No further information was immediately available.
