PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gas prices in Rhode Island remain unchanged from a week ago, AAA Northeast reported Tuesday.

A gallon of self-serve, regular is still selling for an average of $1.96 per gallon.

Rhode Island’s price is the same as the national average, but 88 cents lower than the in-state, per-gallon price a year ago.

The higher pump prices nationally in recent weeks can be attributed to fluctuations in crude and demand as crude oil reached nearly $34 per barrel, its highest price point since the national coronavirus emergency was declared and many states started implementing stay-at-home restrictions, AAA said.

One possible factor that could cause a sudden spike in gas prices is the Atlantic hurricane season that starts June 1. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an above normal season this year.

AAA found regular selling in Rhode Island for as low as $1.72 per gallon and as high as $2.23.
