NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Firefighters rescued several residents who were trapped when a fast-moving fire roared through an apartment building in New Jersey’s largest city early Thursday, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in Newark around 1:40 a.m.
The fire apparently started in a first-floor apartment and soon spread to the upper floors of the four-story building, authorities said. It was brought under control about 45 minutes later.
One child who suffered smoke inhalation was taken to a hospital for treatment, while some adults and children were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. A firefighter was also briefly overcome by smoke but refused medical attention and continued working.
Nineteen residents were displaced by the fire, which remains under investigation.
