COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - Police in the western Iowa city of Council Bluffs have identified an officer who shot an Omaha, Nebraska, man in an exchange of gunfire earlier this month.
Police said Monday in a news release that Officer Michael Roberts shot Jimmy Carr, 34, of Omaha, on May 2 outsident a Council Bluffs gas station. The shooting happened after an employee at the gas station reported that someone had stolen a gas can, police said. Roberts, who responded to the call, encountered Carr outside the station, police said, When Roberts told him to return the gas can, Carr pulled a gun from his pocket and fired at the officer, police said. Roberts returned fire, hitting Carr in the left hip. The officer was not hurt.
Carr has since been released from an Omaha hospital and is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, burglary and a weapons count.
