LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) - A Lakewood police officer fatally shot a driver Friday afternoon during a traffic stop, authorities said.

The 28-year-old man, who is from Tacoma and was not identified, was taken to a local hospital, where he died, KOMO-TV reported.

Lakewood police Capt. Ryan Portmann said the officer pulled the man’s vehicle over and had called for back-up officers. As back-up officers were arriving, Portmann said the officer opened fire, striking the driver.

Police have not yet said what led to the traffic stop and have not identified the officer.

Portmann said a passenger who was in the vehicle with the man was questioned by police.

The Cooperative Cities Crime Response Unit is investigating.
