WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) - A county prosecutor in southern New Jersey has unexpectedly resigned and will be replaced on an interim basis by a high-ranking state criminal justice official.
Gloucester County Prosecutor Charles Fiore’s resignation took effect at noon Thursday. The office referred all questions to the state Attorney General’s office, which declined comment.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Fiore, 60, told his staff in an email that his departure was a “very difficult decision” that was made for family reasons and to pursue opportunities in the private sector.
Fiore, who assumed the role less than three years ago, will be replaced by Christine Hoffman, who has worked for 22 years as a prosecutor. She recently served as the deputy director of the state Division of Criminal Justice in the Attorney General’s office.
It’s not clear when Gov. Phil Murphy will nominate a permanent successor for Fiore.
