FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina say a man is in critical condition after being shot by police.

Fayetteville police said in a statement on Thursday that Gary Lee Tierney Sr., 73, had fired several shots at police officers outside his house.

Police said that officers returned fire and performed life-saving measures before rushing the man to the hospital.

Police said the incident occurred early Wednesday evening after officers responded to a report of a disturbance.

Police said the officers encountered a man with a handgun who refused to obey commands and “disregarded officer attempts to deescalate the situation.” He fired a shot and retreated into his house before stepping outside and firing again.

Police said that Tierney is white. The race of the officers involved was not released.
