SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in the city of South Burlington, Vermont, have overwhelmingly opposed a $209 million school bond proposal to build a new middle and high school.

About 6,500 voted against the project, while roughly 1,700 voted for it on Town Meeting Day Tuesday.

The school board said the project was needed because of overcrowding and aging infrastructure at the South Burlington High School and Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School.

The board said that if the proposal was rejected, it would come up with another solution to address the concerns.
