OPINION:
Twice in one issue? Tuesday’s front-page headline tells us New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is filling a “national void” (“’He has filled a national void’: Andrew Cuomo emerges as Democrats’ counterweight to Trump,” Web, March 30). Who said that? A paid Democratic operative in New York, who then goes on to be quoted as saying, “Trump says this will disappear immediately.”
First of all, the president never said that. Second, the “national void” is in this man’s head. The Times reported in the same issue that 79 percent of U.S. adults say the virus “response by national public health officials is ’good or excellent’; 84% of Republicans and 74% of Democrats.”
In “FDA gives emergency approval for antimalarial drugs in treating coronavirus patients” (Web, March 30), the FDA is on one side and “an outspoken Trump social media critic” is on the other. That is not a “battle.” The FDA is charged with keeping Americans safe; a “social media critic,” not so much. Moreover, the article reports on other media outlets expressing skepticism — without mentioning the New York doctor who is at the epcenter, or his hundreds of positive experiences.
We turn to The Times for the news that the other paper in town doesn’t want to share. Please don’t jump into bed with them.
