DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A large swath of Iowa from north and just east of Des Moines to the Mississippi River remained under a tornado watch Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said the watch would be in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday and included the cities of Ames, Fort Dodge, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Keokuk and Davenport. Severe thunderstorms were expected across much of the state, with some large hail and winds of up to 60 mph (96.6 kph).

The storms were expected to move east out of the state overnight, ushering in some cooler temperatures Sunday ranging from the mid-40s in the north to the mid-50s in the south.
