Ryan Reynolds used his well-known sarcasm this week to encourage Hollywood celebrities to refrain from posting narcissistic social media videos during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I think, in times of crisis, I think we all know that it’s the celebrities that we count on most,” the “Deadpool” actor said Monday. “They’re the ones that are going to get us through this — right after health care workers, of course. First responders. People who work in essential services. Ping-pong players. Mannequins — they’re great. Childhood imaginary friends, sure. Like, 400 other types of people.”
The celebrity’s post comes against a cultural backdrop in which singer Madonna has issued coronavirus musings, naked, from a bathtub filled with rose petals.
Similarly, entertainers were recently roasted by social media critics for responding to the virus with their rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
Mr. Reynolds stuck to offering practical advice.
“Look, stay at home,” he said. “Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. We are going to get through this thing. We are going to get through this thing together.”
The video was seen more than 1.6 million times in less than 24 hours.
Another important message from an important celebrity. Let’s spread the word not the virus. I happily nominate, @stevenpage @Sethrogen and @TerryR49776917 #PlankTheCurve #StayAtHomeSaveLives pic.twitter.com/IRJNI9Y6G9
