EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A school in a New York City suburb scheduled a delayed start Monday morning after a new security guard allowed an unauthorized person onto school property last week.
A security guard at the Waverly School in Eastchester let a man enter the school Friday without screening his identification or issuing him a visitor badge, according to an email Eastchester school district superintendent Rob Glass sent to parents. The guard was on his second day of the job.
The man said he was there to see someone in maintenance. The man then asked to use the restroom but instead went into a vacant teaching assistant’s office, from which money was later reported missing.
The man spent a total of seven minutes inside the school before staff found him and escorted him out of the building. He did not enter any classrooms or come into direct contact with children, according to Glass.
The school planned to have a two-hour delayed start for students Monday, so staff members could review safety and security protocols, district officials said.
Eastchester police have identified a possible suspect but no arrests have been made, Chief Timothy Bonci told The Journal News.
