U.S. jobless claims spike in past week, survey reports

U.S. jobless claims rose to 281,000 for the week of March 14 as the coronavirus pandemic causes more layoffs.

The survey by the Department of Labor found that jobless claims rose 70,000 from the previous week. The survey had expected about 220,000 claims.
