OPINION:
I am getting totally fed up with the politically correct police who refuse to allow anyone to make a statement they think might offend someone. Just who are they to make such a determination and then splash it all over the media? In doing so, they’re attempting to belittle that person or group.
In his March 18 press conference, President Trump referred to the current pandemic virus as the “Chinese virus” (“Trump dubs COVID-19 ’Chinese virus’ despite hate crime risks,” Web, March 18). Well, the Chinese and the liberal media had a conniption over this, and some even demanded a retraction. Yes, the medical name is COVID-19, and it is also called the coronavirus. But labeling a virus according to its place of origin is nothing new.
The last worldwide pandemic (1918-20) was called the Spanish flu, as it originated in Spain. Other viruses were called by their countries of origin as well. However, because this virus originated in China, and it is beneath the Chinese government to be blamed for anything, referring to the coronavirus as the “Chinese Virus” cannot be allowed.
Well, China, that is just tough. The virus started in your country. It was not brought to you by the U.S. military. So just accept the fact that it is the Chinese flu.
